Ah Ha Ha Ha Staying Alive

January 24, 2012 in Uncategorized, World 050 News, World News, Worlds 41-50 News

Many things have been said about the tribe Hermit.  Most of the time they have been looked upon as though they are a lower class of  tribe. They have been called many things and I wondered to myself if there was any truth behind the name calling or if it is all just normal external flaming. So I attempted to dive deep into the Hermit tribe, this was no easy task even with me wearing the Hermit tag briefly. Once I was told by a Hermit that even though I was “officially” a hermit that I would never be able to truly understand what it means to be a hermit. At that moment I just thought he was being an ass but after taking the time to look deeper and from a new angle I believe he may have truly had a point.

Hermit the barb noblers, we have all heard them called this. Hermit the n00b tribe, we have all heard them called this. Hermit nothing but a rim tribe, also we have all heard them called this but are these things true? Is hermit nothing but a n00by, barb nobling, rim tribe? Or perhaps are these things a bit like beauty and seen differently by the eye of the beholder??

 Whether you’re a Hermit
or whether you’re a Kermit
you’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Feel the city breakin
and everybody shakin’
and were stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive

Logistically speaking Hermit did start on the rim but even with their starting position are they really just a rim tribe? Usually rim tribes don’t last long, merge and over invite which Hermit have done at times. Once again though they are still here despite what most would consider their mistakes along the way.  Rim tribes seem to usually not make it very far past the rim either and even though they have not made it exactly into the depths of the core they have managed to make it further out to the core than any other rim tribe that I have personally seen. Here is one members outlook of the aspect of Hermit being a rim tribe…

Ahmed:

True, but a rim tribe like Hermit, becomes as big as they did because they outlast the Tribes that were bigger and even better members to begin with… That is what happened to Hermit. They allied with HELL…When Hellena left they gained those members. Then when HUG collapsed, they gain their members that were on the border… Usually a rim tribe is the friendliest players that have more fun on Skype than in game.

Hermit is often called a n00b tribe for all sorts of various reasons but weren’t we all n00bs at once? I do think Hermit has grown, evolved. There was a time when they were upwards of 80 members. Times when they would merge without good cause but have they learned along the way? Have they made the changes necessary to be considered not a n00b? Or maybe did they figure out simply how to be a tribe in every sense of the word? Another members thoughts on how Hermit has evolved…..

CraterG2001:

Just a core group of players that have formed strong friendships through this game.
Everyone of us learned how to play the game and learned what it meant to be a tribe from one another.

There is also the war between ODA and Hermit, which 1984 also joined in. Hermit took a great lead in the beginning by pouncing on the inactive Hotsheep account, along with quite a few gains on the Kanshi account, though most of their gains were in their core and not on the front line with ODA. Eventually ODA took the lead by keeping constant pressure on Hermits frontline, pushing them back bit by bit. With Hermit being plagued by inactivity it was difficult for them to manage be constantly under fire.

Current War stats…..

The first thing people think about when they hear the name Hermit is usually barb nobler.  Of course they noble barbs, really nearly everyone nobles a barb or two along the way. There are all sorts of strategies for nobling barbs, some thought of more highly than others but nevertheless we all have our own personal barb nobling policy when it comes to nobling barbs.  My question is though are they as big of barb noblers as thought to be?? Things to take into consideration is first off Hermit has been around since July of 2010 so computing a total number of barb conquers really doesn’t tell you as much as you think. Second off you must consider that Hermit has usually had higher numbers of members than tribes like ODA or 1984, so really you can’t just do a quick comparison.

Another Hermit member’s thoughts on barb nobling…..

Julie Anne (Jaffajules):

Everyone nobles barbs, especially the big ones, probably the reason why hermit had so many big barbs in our territory to noble is that, a lot of the enemy in our midst deleted after being demolished by hermit.
You don’t leave big barbs for the enemy to take root in the middle of you.

I decided to do a comparison on barb conquers, per month, per member count of Hermit and ODA, here are the results….

Yellow column is the results….red box is who had the highest barb average for that month, surprisingly there was a month that Hermit did not hold the highest average.

I also had the opportunity to do an interview with one of the current dukes of Hermit, I hope you find it as interesting as I did.

CraterG2001:

I am available for a short while.

Jen:

Ok, so you were saying you were one of the original members of Hermit correct?.

CraterG2001:

Correct.

Jen:

How did you choose Hermit?.

CraterG2001:

It was either Hell, Hermit, or Hades+.
I knew several members in Hell that said they weren’t going to be around forever.
Hades+ had a ton of noobs.
And Hermit seemed to be steadily growing.

Jen:

That they did.

CraterG2001:

Made a few friends there and got the invite.
At the time, I was the largest member.

Jen:

Hermit is one of the oldest surviving tribes, how do you believe this has happened?.

CraterG2001:

Because we are a bunch of stingy losers with too much time on our hands.

Jen:

Hermit seems to be like no other tribe, what is the major differences that have kept you all together?.

CraterG2001:

Just a core group of players that have formed strong friendships through this game.
Everyone of us learned how to play the game and learned what it meant to be a tribe from one another.

Jen:

What do you think of all the flaming going on, calling you barb noblers, noob tribes ect..

CraterG2001:

I think it is silly that people would take it upon themselves to judge someone else’s game play. One of the greatest things about TWs is that everyone can play the game however they like. You have your casual players and your “professionals”. If people want to be that proud of themselves for being good at a web browser game, then more power to them. But the life skills that they gain by doing so are invaluable….

Jen:

Does Hermit have a barb nobling policy?.

CraterG2001:

In the beginning there was one. I don’t think anyone adheres to anything like that now.
I think there is a ton of free real estate out there that were once players who have gone barb. I think all 9k point villages are fair game. If you have the nobles for it, why the heck not..
In a time of war, I frown upon it a bit more though.

Jen:

What do you make of the ODA war?.

CraterG2001:

I think ODA has some very strong players that play very well as a team.

Jen:

You guys had a strong lead in the beginning what do you think happened?.

CraterG2001:

Many Hermit’s have quit playing, or made excuses not to get involved in the war. You can only have so much of this before a tribe full of extremely good players starts to exploit all weaknesses.
Half of the Hermits were doing all the fighting and the other half was watching… This obviously is a recipe for disaster.
Not to mention that we somehow pissed off every other tribe in W50 and they started attacking us and supporting ODA.

Jen:

True.

CraterG2001:

Pretty hard to come back from those odds.

Jen:

I heard a rumor that Hermit was going to mass delete and there have already been a few deletes, is this true?.

CraterG2001:

That is news to me.

Jen:

Pielover and ritchieshots deleted, did they give a reason or just hit the button?.

CraterG2001:

I honestly do not know the answer to that question.

Jen:

How does Hermit run, I mean how does hierarchy in Hermit work?.

CraterG2001:

Couple of dukes, and several Barons.
Pretty much like a democracy though.
There were a few decisions that were made by the dukes that weren’t discussed, but for the most part a democracy.

Jen:

You mentioned above that the friendships have helped you survive so long, with these tough times have these friendships endured?.

CraterG2001:

Of course! Hermit will always be friends. We have lost a few along the way, but for the most part, everyone communicates still..

Jen:

Why are so many of your bigger guys still nobling so many barbs during a war?.

CraterG2001:

Survival?.

Jen:

Do you believe you guys can still survive at this point?.

CraterG2001:

I believe we are treading water….

Jen:

I think I just have one more question.
You guys have a bond like no other tribe, you have stuck together when others would of given up not only the world but the friendships, how have you managed to keep this bond, this hold to keep you all together for so long?.

CraterG2001:

To be honest, we just have some really good people in Hermit. After 2 years or so, we all know things about each others families… There have been many children born in the families of our tribe. There is even an arranged marriage set up between some of the babies many years down the road… :) The reason Hermit has been around is because we have respect for everyone in the tribe on a personal level. Not just in game.

One last piece of the Hermit puzzle I would like to take a look at before ending today. No matter what you think of Hermit they have managed to do one thing that you don’t see very often. They have stayed together. Most of the members have been together since around July 2012. Not many tribes can stand that test of time, for that matter not many tribal wars friendships have been able to stand that test of time.  I talked to several different members in Hermit, each one of them referred to their tribe as their family. A group of people that they may have disagreements with but at the end of the day they are still together, warring together, trying to stand up as warriors but also against incredible odds and a bad reputation. How many of us would have given up long ago if it had been us in their spot? Regardless of stats I believe core Hermit members have a bond that not many tribes are able to have. Even now when they have seemingly given up on world 50 they have traveled to world 61 to once again give the hermit family a chance.
