This is my first post, so not too sure what to say, so I’ll write about a pet hate of mine.

I would like to start by saying; I intend no offense to anyone. My views don’t necessarily represent that of the TW.net team, (although it’s most likely that they do). Here’s a little about myself, I was told I was dyslexic at about 12. I had great difficulties with English, and any form of writing, spelling and to some extent reading. Fortunately, my school and family were very supportive, and helped me to overcome that, and write like this.

So anyway, back to my point. I don’t understand why,

“ppl hve 2 tlk lik dis man…… wid d onli punctuation bein bre fullstopz… yea????”

It’s not cool, and it’s not much harder to write in real English. Fair enough spelling mistakes, and errors, or people that don’t speak English naturally making errors (No doubt I’ve made a few in this post). But typing like the example up there is just annoying. You wouldn’t do it in an exam, why do it online? People give that excuse “This isn’t an exam, it’s quicker to type like that”, (Well actually they give the excuse, “dis isnt a exam ritin lik dis is qucka”). It was originally started as some weird form of sending a SMS messgage (that’s a text to you and me). Used because you only get 160 characters in each message, so fair enough, people want to save that 10pence or so that using another message would cost. But when your writing online, they’re generally no restrictions on how much you can type.

So the thing about writing like that over the internet is the only impression others get of you, is the one that you give them. And writing like that, or all in caps, or a mixture of both, just sets out the wrong impression. First thing I think of is, is this person 7? (No offense to the very literate 7 year olds out there.) The next thing I wonder is did they type this with their forehead? (No offense to those very skilled at forehead typing). Finally I wonder if I should even finish reading. Usually I don’t.

If you write properly more people will respect you, and listen to what you are saying. People will actually take time to give you a decent response. Dare I say, more people will even like you? Those of you who actually made it this far, probably are the literate ones. So if you too are bored of 7year olds that type with their foreheads. Explain to them what a dictionary is, tell them to get Firefox, and use the “Check my spelling as I type” feature.

If by some miracle you got this far and are one of those that type like a…. then I think you should make an effort try to talk in English, and see how much better people treat you. Trust me; you’ll notice it, (Unless you’re completely unlikable and annoying. Then you’re stuffed).

As I said earlier, how lucky I was to have such a good school, and English teacher. The way they got me to ‘learn’ how to write properly, was by getting my mum and family to basically force me to type real English on MSN, and other online places, (Yes I used to type like a…..). It helped me a lot, and it stuck. When I saw how differently people treated me, there was no way I was going to go back to missing out letters. In fact, now it’s harder for me to think/write “in dis styl coz i bre hrd to do m8”.
